That framing matters. If you already know you love "The Third Man" and want trivia, you go to IMDb or TMDb. If you're standing in Vienna wondering why a specific sewer entrance looks familiar, or planning a trip and want to build an itinerary around places that show up on screen, FilmMap is built for that direction of the question.

What You Can Actually Do With It

Based on the current catalog, the core use cases are:

  • Film tourism trip planning. Search a city or country and pull up every production shot there — useful for building a self-guided walking tour before a trip rather than after one.
  • "Where was this filmed?" lookups. Instead of digging through forum threads or a director's commentary track, you look up the title directly and get the location(s) tied to it.

What it's not, at least right now: a review site, a streaming guide, or a place to get cast/crew detail.   • If you're planning to build anything on top of it (a travel app, a location-tourism itinerary tool), don't assume free API access will persist — there's no published API terms either.

The honest takeaway: FilmMap isn't trying to out-catalog IMDb or TMDb on title count, and it doesn't need to. It's solving a narrower problem — reliable, browsable geography — that both of those tools treat as an afterthought.

Where It Falls Short Right Now

  • Catalog size. 4,446 titles sounds like a lot until you remember TMDb tracks hundreds of thousands. Recent releases and long-tail international titles may not be there yet.
  • No published roadmap or API docs. If you want to integrate this into a travel app or itinerary tool, there's nothing to build against yet.
  • No pricing transparency. Free today doesn't tell you what free means in six months.
  • No user accounts or contribution system visible yet, which limits how fast the catalog can grow compared to crowd-sourced competitors like IMDb.

Should You Try It Today?

Yes, if you're the kind of traveler or film fan who plans trips around "this was filmed here" moments, or you're researching filming geography for a project. It does one thing — location-first film discovery — better than the general-purpose alternatives that treat location as a side note. Just don't expect it to replace IMDb or TMDb for anything outside that lane, and don't build a product on top of it yet given the lack of published API terms or pricing.
